Facts about being up a tree:
- A professional tree climber is called a arborist in America
- Tree climbing as an organized recreational activity using modern climbing equipment emerged in the early 1980s in USA
- In 1983, Peter "Treeman" Jenkins, an active arborist and retired rock climber, founded Tree Climbers International, Inc. and opened the world's first tree climbing school in Atlanta, Georgia USA.
- Many Different techniques are used to climb trees depending on the climber's individual style, purpose, and preferences. Generally though, climbing is performed by lapping a long rope over a limb and ascending the fallen end using a friction knot tied from initial tie's excess "tail."
- The difficulty of any particular climb depends on many factors: the regularity of branching, the brittleness of dead wood in some species, whether the bark is rough or smooth, the width of the trunk and branches, the height of the tree, the location of the tree, and the weather are all factors.
- The Doubled Rope Technique (DdRT) is used to self belay the climber in such a way that the rope can be retrieved without going back up the tree.
- The single rope technique (SRT) is used mainly for getting to the top of large trees which cannot be easily free climbed.
- Lead Climbing is employed by climber where points of protection are formed by girthing the tree's limbs with slings. Once the lead climber ascends the tree, he or she may create a belay or top rope anchor or else simply rappel down.
- Tree climbing is an "on rope" activity that employs a mixture of techniques and gear principally derived from rock climbing and caving.
- Tree climbing techniques are also used to climb trees for other purposes: tree care (arborists) , animal rescue, research, and activism.
- An Arborist is somebody who is a professional in the practise of arboriculture which is the cultivation and management of tree's, shrubs, vines and woody plants.
- Arborists gain qualifications to practice arboriculture in a variety of ways and some arborists are more qualified than others. Experience working safely and effectively in and around trees is essential. Arborists tend to specialize in one or more disciplines of arboriculture, such as diagnosis and treatment, climbing and pruning, cabling and lightning protection, or perhaps consultation and report writing. All these disciplines are related and some arborists are very well experienced in all areas of tree work, but not all arborists have the training or experience to properly practice every discipline.
- In Australia arboricultural education and training are streamlined countrywide through a multi-disciplinary vocational education, training, and qualification authority called the Australian qualifications framework which offers varying levels of professional qualification.
In France a qualified arborist must hold a Management of Ornamental Trees certificate, and a qualified arborist climber must hold aPruning and Care of Trees certificate; both delivered by the French ministry of Arboriculture.
In the UK an arborist can gain qualifications up to and including a Masters degree. Generally most arborists only attain chainsaw related safety certificates (NPTCs) and do not progress to higher academic study. Most agricultural colleges offer national certificates, diplomas and some offer foundation, bachelor and masters degrees in arboriculture.
In the USA a Certified Arborist (CA) is a professional who has over three years of documented and verified experience and has passed a rigorous written test from the International society of Arboriculture. Other designations include Municipal Specialist, Utility Specialist and Board Certified Master Arborist (BCMA).

" The Benefits of Tree Climbing
-Recreational (technical) tree climbing has a number of distinct advantages over many other adventure activities. Here are some of them: -Tree climbing is good exercise. Tree climbing is not only fun, but it's also an excellent workout. Though it's not nearly as demanding as it appears, climbing is great exercise for the arms and legs. Climbers work many muscle groups they often don't use elsewhere, and climbing is also great for the spine. The extra bonus to this exercise is that it is stimulating and never boring.-Tree climbing is very safe. When climbers carefully follow the basic "do and don't" rules, they are virtually assured of a safe climbing experience. TCI has never had anyone fall out of a tree or get badly injured during one of our events. -Trees are everywhere! You don't have to look far to find a good climbing tree, especially if you're in a natural area. Even in an urbanized setting you can usually find a tree worth climbing. -Trees are alive and natural. There is something very wonderful about getting outdoors and being related to the part of our environment that resides there. Humans find peace and relaxation in the branches of a tree.-All your senses come alive. A whole new perspective is added to the climbing experience through the feeling of touch as the tree moves and sound as the wind whistles through the leaves. -Tree climbing is cost-effective. Once you've made your initial layout for your basic gear, there are very few further expenses. You won't have to travel too far to find a tree, and you can climb most trees for free!-You don't have to build an expensive structure. Rope courses, climbing walls, and alpine towers are expensive to build and maintain. They have to be continually inspected for defects because the structures are man-made. While trees need to be inspected every so often, there's no other work to do before you have a perfect climbing structure!-Tree climbing is a year-round sport. During the hot months, you have the canopy to provide an awning for shade. In winter, the awning is taken down, and there's no barrier to the warm sunlight.""Does anyone know where I can find an outdoor tree climbing in centre in Northern England?"
"Carlton Lodge in North Yorkshire have a High Ropes course on poles and also a climbing tree to about 40'".....
